A criminal case over 12,000 tons of garbage has been opened in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The Nizhny Novgorod Interdistrict Environmental Prosecutor's Office uncovered serious violations in waste management during the operation of a solid municipal waste landfill in the Shatkovsky district, the agency's press service reported.
During an inspection it was established that the municipal enterprise Komunenergo had stockpiled more than 12,000 tonnes of waste outside the official landfill. As a result, soil covering an area of 1.6 hectares became contaminated. Specialists from Rosprirodnadzor estimated that the damage to the soil exceeds 400 million rubles.
The materials of the prosecutor's inspection were forwarded to the preliminary investigation authority to decide on bringing those responsible to criminal liability.
A decision was made there to open a criminal case under the article related to violations of the rules for handling hazardous waste. The progress of the investigation and the remediation of the consequences are under the supervision of the environmental prosecutor's office.
Earlier it was reported that two landfills with a combined area of 12 hectares had been eliminated in the Nizhny Novgorod region since the beginning of the year.
