October 24, 2025 — Gleb Nikitin, Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, and Kristina Trubinova, General Director of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, signed a cooperation agreement. It is aimed at creating Bakhrushin Theatre Museum projects in the region. This was reported by the press service of the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region.

The signing of the strategic cultural cooperation agreement between the region and the museum took place in the renovated space of the Center for Theatrical History on Tatarskaya Street in Moscow. Among the key areas of cooperation are the implementation of cultural and educational programs, as well as the opening of a new museum of the Nizhny Novgorod State Puppet Theatre, scheduled for 2026.

“In recent years Nizhny Novgorod theaters have made a very big leap forward. Within the framework of federal projects and regional funding we have carried out important renovation works for the theaters and updated equipment. This gives us additional opportunities to reach new creative heights — to work with guest directors, to master non-standard formats, to win landmark awards. The Bakhrushin Museum is the country’s main theatre museum, and our partnership will be another step both in developing the museum direction and in developing the theaters,” noted Gleb Nikitin.

One of the first projects to be implemented under the agreement will be the new museum of the Nizhny Novgorod State Puppet Theatre — a modern cultural space where visitors will be able to trace the history of one of Russia’s oldest puppet theaters from its founding in 1929 to the present day. The exhibition will present unique materials from the theater’s collection and the Bakhrushin Museum’s holdings: posters, archival documents, photographs, sketches and other artifacts.

“The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum has been consistently expanding its regional direction, developing cultural infrastructure, supporting creative initiatives and creating conditions for residents of the regions to engage with the cultural history of our country. Under the agreement signed today we will carry out museum, educational and outreach projects, creating an environment where the theater remains alive and in demand. Our task is not only to preserve theatrical heritage, but also to ensure its development through education, partnership and the involvement of a new generation of audiences. This is where we see the modern mission of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum — to be a link between tradition and the future of the theater,” said Kristina Trubinova, General Director of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the federal program “New Museum of the Theater,” initiated by Kristina Trubinova in 2023 with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Under the program, museum spaces are being created at operating theaters across the country. Its main goal is to preserve unique theatrical collections and make the heritage of domestic theatre accessible to a wide audience. Permanent exhibitions have already appeared in Kursk, Makhachkala, Kineshma, Yaroslavl and Sukhum. The opening of such museums in Samara and Donetsk is planned by the end of 2025.

Another priority area of cooperation is the creation of an interactive educational platform for children and their parents. This is a modular project of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, within which children get acquainted with the world of theater and its professions through play and museum-theatrical pedagogy.

Cooperation with the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region will be an important step in strengthening interregional cultural interaction and developing a unified museum-and-theater space in Russia.

      Background:

The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum was founded in 1894 by Moscow industrialist and philanthropist Aleksey Alexandrovich Bakhrushin (1865–1929). Today the museum is the largest keeper of Russia’s theatrical heritage and the third museum in the country by collection size after the State Historical Museum and the Hermitage. More than 1.5 million items across 19 sites and museum funds include the archives of celebrated theatrical figures, costume and set design sketches by famous stage designers, stage costumes of great actors, decorative and applied art objects, programs and posters for performances, photographs, portraits and rare editions.

With the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, within the framework of the comprehensive museum development program, the country’s first Museum-Theatre Quarter at Paveletskaya is being created.
