The Nizhny Novgorod aeration station has again received a warning over a foul odor.
08 October 2025 15:43 Society. Rosprirodnadzor has again drawn attention to the activities of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, having recorded a repeated spread of an unpleasant sewage odor in Nizhny Novgorod.
The agency’s interregional directorate for Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Republic of Mordovia issued an official warning to JSC Teplovodokanal (formerly JSC Nizhegorodsky Vodokanal). The organization was warned about the inadmissibility of violating environmental regulations in the operation of treatment facilities.
The trigger was information from the FSBI "Upper Volga UGMS", which recorded the spread of a sewage odor from the aeration station in the Nizhegorodsky and Sovetsky districts.
Rosprirodnadzor recalled that in August, following numerous complaints from residents, an unscheduled inspection of the enterprise was carried out. At that time specialists found exceedances of permissible concentrations of harmful substances such as hydrogen sulfide, phenol and formaldehyde in atmospheric emissions from two sources.
As a result of the inspection the company was held administratively liable and received an order to eliminate the identified violations. The deadline for fulfilling the order is set for June 2026.
The supervisory agency noted that, judging by the current situation with the odors, no effective measures have been taken at the aeration station.
Recall that in mid-September the center of Nizhny Novgorod was again engulfed by a foul smell, and complaints about the stench from Nizhny Novgorod residents continue to appear on social networks to this day.
It was also reported that control over the discharges of Nizhny Novgorod enterprises has been intensified. Over two months 767 inspections of industrial facilities were conducted, during which 46 violations were identified.
