This weekend the first episodes of the drama "Comeback" (18+) starring Alexander Petrov in the lead role were released. For residents of Nizhny Novgorod the eight-episode drama is notable because part of the filming took place in Nizhny Novgorod.
Recall that at the center of the plot is a man without a name or past who woke up in a hospital with amnesia. He is forced to survive on the city streets until some schoolchildren decide to help him remember who he is. One of them is the school cook who feeds the protagonist. The events take place in 2004.
In "Comeback" Nizhny Novgorod appears not only as a backdrop but as an independent character reflecting the atmosphere of the early noughties. In the very first episodes several iconic locations of the Volga capital appear: the Strelka, Rozhdestvenskaya Street, the Vodnik Stadium (now declared unsafe and closed), Gorky Street, the Kanavinsky Market ("Central") and Avtozavodsky Park.
However, there were some goofs. For example, modern packhouses on the Strelka and a port crane — an art installation installed in the summer of 2024 — appear on screen several times. At the same time, the creators managed to "erase" the football stadium and the ice arena under construction, which, of course, did not yet exist in the early 2000s.
It's nice to see not only well-known locations but also actors from local theaters in the series. For instance, Youth Theater (TYuZ) actor Igor Avrov, who played a buyer of stolen goods, and Oleg Shapkov from the M. Gorky Drama Theater, who was cast as a homeless man, are spotted in the episodes.
