Nizhny Novgorod's Torpedo suffered a 3–5 defeat to Cherepovets' Severstal, nearly erasing a three-goal deficit during the game.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 4th minute. Three minutes later Torpedo managed to equalize. Captain Alexey Kruchinin, who spent last season with Severstal, finished a counterattack and scored his 100th KHL goal.
In the second period the visitors seized the initiative. Severstal scored three times — Kirill Pilipenko, Grigory Vashchenko and Mikhail Ilyin found the net. By the intermission the Cherepovets side led 4–1.
In the third period Nizhny Novgorod reduced the deficit. Maksim Letunov converted on the power play, scoring his first goal of the season. Then Sergei Goncharuk took advantage of a chance and scored into an empty net.
However, they were unable to force overtime. The opponent sealed the final score by scoring into the empty net — 3–5.
Seventeen-year-old forward from Torpedo's system Viktor Fyodorov also made his debut in today's game.
Earlier it was reported that the Nizhny Novgorod team beat St. Petersburg's SKA in two away games.
