From October 1 to 10, 2025, the annual Decade of Older Persons will be held in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Social institutions across the region have prepared more than 250 themed events (0+) of various kinds for the older generation.
The Ministry of Social Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region noted that the Decade is designed to increase the life activity of elderly citizens. With the support of government bodies and public organizations, events will take place in all municipalities.
From October 1 to 10, the Center for Social Services of the Pilninsky Municipal District will hold a "Free Haircut" campaign for visitors to its day care unit. During the same dates, the Comprehensive Center for Social Services of the Chkalovsk Urban District will launch the "Grandson for an Hour" initiative to assist pensioners with stacking firewood, harvesting, and tidying their yards.
On October 6, the Comprehensive Social Services Center of the Navashinsky Urban District will organize an entertaining retro party for older adults. On the same day, the Comprehensive Center of the Tonkinsky Municipal District will start sports competitions "Movement — Life" among teams from the day care unit and members of the All‑Russian Society of the Disabled.
On October 8, staff of the "Myza" Comprehensive Social Services Center in the Prioksky District of Nizhny Novgorod will hold an interdistrict chess tournament among Nizhny Novgorod veterans to determine the best senior chess player.
The largest event of the Decade, timed to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons, will take place on October 8. A gala concert will traditionally be held at the Central House of Culture of Railway Workers in Nizhny Novgorod, with about 700 guests of the "silver" generation invited from across the region.
The Decade will conclude with the awarding of commemorative badges "Honored Veteran of the Nizhny Novgorod Region" to 28 Nizhny Novgorod residents. These are people who have achieved significant results after retirement and have made a meaningful contribution to the development of veteran movements. The ceremony is scheduled for October 16.
The 2025 program also includes family photo exhibitions, festive concerts, spartakiads (sports festivals), online classes, training sessions, friendly gatherings, musical evenings, quest games, excursions to protected sites of the Nizhny Novgorod region, and film quizzes.
The region’s Minister of Social Policy, Igor Sedykh, emphasized that older people remain active and energetic, and that the state’s task is to create conditions for realizing their potential, finding new hobbies and social contacts, so that everyone feels needed and in demand.
Detailed information about the Decade’s events can be obtained from district social protection administrations and comprehensive social service centers.
The Decade’s events fully align with the goals of the national project "Family," which has been implemented in Russia since 2025 at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin. The project succeeds the national projects "Demography" and "Culture" and includes measures aimed at the comprehensive development of families, expanding support measures, creating conditions for active longevity of the older generation, and ensuring high‑quality, accessible medical care.
