Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Dmitry Starostin held talks with a delegation from Senegal headed by the country’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Stéphane Sambu. The delegation also included Senegal’s honorary consul Vladimir Dubinkin and business representatives, the regional government press service reported.

The parties discussed prospects for joint projects in industry, agriculture, IT and education, as well as opportunities for developing tourism and establishing sister-city ties.

According to Dmitry Starostin, Senegal is a promising direction for expanding the region’s international contacts. He noted that delegation members identified specific needs in agriculture, mechanical engineering and high technologies.

“Our enterprises have already offered their developments, and we will strive to respond to these requests as quickly and effectively as possible. We also consider other areas promising: culture, education, tourism. Today students from Senegal are already studying at our universities, and we want to see more such examples,” the deputy head of government stressed.

The parties paid particular attention to educational initiatives. The Senegalese delegation visited the Nizhny Novgorod IT University, where prospects for academic exchange and joint digital projects were discussed.

The visit program included talks at the regional government level, meetings with entrepreneurs and familiarization with the activities of Nizhny Novgorod enterprises. An important part of the trip was a round table at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, where Senegalese representatives met with seven regional companies operating in agriculture and industry. The discussion also involved the ANO "Gorky Tech" and the Regional Export Support Center.

Ambassador Stéphane Sambu noted that the visit helped outline key areas of cooperation and determine concrete steps to develop collaboration.

“First I became acquainted with Nizhny Novgorod from a historical perspective, then there were meetings that helped me better assess the region’s economic potential. I am very grateful to the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region for the invitation and the opportunity to find new partners. I am confident our cooperation will continue to develop and strengthen,” the diplomat said.

The delegation also visited the region’s industrial enterprises. According to Senegal’s honorary consul Vladimir Dubinkin, the visit proved to be eventful and useful.

“We met with large companies operating in both the Russian and African markets and discussed prospects for joint projects. First steps have already been taken: fertilizer deliveries to Senegal have begun, and expansion of cooperation in mechanical engineering and the agricultural sector is planned. In addition, we see interesting potential for imports from Senegal to Russia — fruits, nuts, cocoa. Such visits help find real points of contact and form long-term projects,” he said.

Earlier it was reported that Gabon will study the Nizhny Novgorod Region’s potential for cooperation.
