Economy. Residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region view changes in the labor market positively: most are ready to change professions, master new hard and soft skills, and are confident that in five years the most in-demand specialists will be those in artificial intelligence and machine learning. These data are presented in a study by hh.ru and the II International Symposium "Creating the Future."
The survey included 2,644 Russians from various regions. According to 68% of respondents, experts in AI and machine learning will be leaders in demand. 65% named developers in cybersecurity, 44% scientists, and 32% agricultural specialists. In addition, 21% mentioned psychologists, 9% designers, and 7% soft-skills coaches.
The results of Nizhny Novgorod residents were close to the nationwide ones. More than half of those surveyed in the region also singled out AI specialists (62%), cybersecurity experts (57%) and scientists (52%). At the same time, residents of the region more than other regions count on robotics and automation engineers (48%), specialists in agriculture and organic production (43%). Data analysts (30%) and digital transformation managers (23%) were also mentioned. Designers (10%) and soft-skills coaches (3%) received the least support.
Automation and the introduction of AI generally do not cause fear among Nizhny Novgorod residents. 49% are confident that neural networks will not replace their jobs, 15% allow for the automation of certain tasks, and 8% already use AI tools. Only 3% fear losing their profession. The majority of the region’s residents view AI neutrally (64%), seeing it as an incentive to retrain. A quarter of respondents welcome the development of technologies, believing it frees up time for creativity, and only 10% perceive AI as a threat to social stability.
Residents of the region demonstrate a readiness for change: 66% said they are willing to change professions if theirs becomes less relevant, and 15% are ready to take serious steps with external support.
To remain competitive, Nizhny Novgorod residents actively develop themselves. 33% are learning to work with AI tools, 30% analyze the labor market, 23% are mastering adjacent professions, and 20% are learning new ones. 13% are building a financial cushion, and the same share rely on the state or their employer. 8% each are creating a personal brand and updating their portfolio, and 7% study sciences.
The majority of respondents (72%) plan to improve their hard and soft skills. The main motivation for 69% is the desire to remain competitive, and another 10% are ready to learn if necessary.
Among hard skills, priorities are working with AI (64%), programming and design (41% each), data analysis (39%), marketing and product management (27% each), and cybersecurity (18%). Among soft skills, the most frequently mentioned were critical thinking (66%), emotional intelligence (52%), creativity and adaptability (41% each). Project management skills (36%), communication and teamwork (34%) are also in demand.
Eighty percent of respondents prefer to learn independently — through books, articles and videos. 55% rely on corporate programs, 41% choose online courses, 25% — offline training. 9% develop through mentorship and professional communities.
Marina Dorokhova, Head of the "Career and Skills" division at hh.ru, emphasized that developing concrete professional abilities today becomes the key to success: employers are moving to a skill-based approach, where skills come to the fore rather than formal indicators such as a diploma or length of service.
Nizhny Novgorod residents look for information about future trends in the media and blogs (39%), on career platforms (38%), and in professional communities (34%). 31% consult colleagues and employers, 16% — educational platforms, 11% — government resources, and 7% turn to career consultants.
