More than 10.5 million rubles were allocated for the purchase of genetically engineered drugs for residents of Nizhny Novgorod suffering from severe forms of allergies.

      More than 10.5 million rubles were allocated for the procurement of genetically engineered drugs for Nizhny Novgorod residents suffering from severe forms of allergy in 2025. The purchase of expensive medicines is being funded from the regional budget. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Health.

      As the department noted, there are currently almost 6,000 adults in the Nizhny Novgorod Region registered for outpatient monitoring for atopic bronchial asthma, allergic rhinosinusitis, atopic dermatitis and urticaria. Treatment with genetically engineered biological therapy drugs is required for those who suffer the most severe forms of these common allergic diseases. On average this concerns 5–7% of patients under medical follow-up.

      “We prescribe such drugs to patients whose disease course is extremely severe and for whom all other existing treatment options do not produce noticeable improvement. It should be noted that the cost of such therapy is extremely high: depending on the specific pathology and the drug suitable for the patient, the price of a single injection ranges from 40,000 to 120,000 rubles. Patients require them monthly for 3–5 years,” explained the chief freelance allergist of the regional Ministry of Health, Elena Melnikova.

      According to her, gene therapy drugs have been available free of charge for this category of patients since 2008. In some cases procurement is carried out under separate federal programs.

      “Only original drugs that have proven their effectiveness and safety are used in treatment. At the same time, the share of medicines developed and produced in our country is growing every year. Ten years ago we were forced to purchase almost all drugs from abroad at extremely inflated prices. Over the past three years the share of Russian drugs used to treat patients in the Nizhny Novgorod Region has increased noticeably. For example, our patients with extremely severe bronchial asthma and spontaneous urticaria receive a domestic drug produced using recombinant DNA,” Elena Melnikova explained.

      The allergist added that today there are no difficulties in the region regarding access to genetically engineered biological therapy drugs: all patients receive the necessary treatment in full. In addition, over the past four years the region has seen a steady decline in the number of patients suffering from severe uncontrolled forms of allergic diseases.

      Recall that improving access to medical care for citizens, including drug therapy, is one of the most important priorities of the national project “Long and Active Life.” The new national project is a continuation of the national project “Healthcare” and is being implemented at the instruction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. It covers all areas of work in the sector — from modernization of primary care to rehabilitation.
