Torpedo won the first game!

      A true hockey thriller was delivered by Nizhny Novgorod’s Torpedo and Ufa’s Salavat Yulaev in the opening game of the KHL regular season 2025–2026, which ended in a Torpedo victory (4–3).

      The teams treated spectators at KRK Nagorny to an entertaining game, combining for seven goals, and the match between Torpedo and Salavat Yulaev remained in doubt until the final seconds of the third period. In the first official game of the new season the Nizhny Novgorod side took the scoring initiative, and in the 16th minute forward Vladislav Firstov opened the scoring. In the second 20-minute period Vasily Atanasov increased the hosts’ lead to 2–0, but in the closing moments of the period the visitors managed to score two straight goals against Ivan Kulbakov’s net in just over a minute (goals by Ildan Gazimov and Maxim Kuznetsov), and the teams went to the second intermission tied 2–2.

      The tie on the scoreboard held until the 48th minute, when Danil Alalykin put Salavat Yulaev ahead — 3–2. However, that did not unsettle Torpedo; they kept probing the opponent’s goal, and first the team captain Alexey Kruchinin (a minute and a half after the Ufa goal) restored parity — 3–3, and in the 52nd minute Nikita Shavin sent the Nagorny stands into rapturous applause, and that goal proved to be the winner for the Nizhny Novgorod side — 4–3!

      Thus, in the very first regular-season game, four Torpedo forwards opened their season’s goal accounts, and two other forwards (Sergey Goncharuk and Egor Vinogradov) recorded assists — Goncharuk with two — and he, together with Kruchinin and Atanasov, who registered not only goals but assists as well, lead the team’s scoring charts. By the way, all three (Kruchinin, Atanasov, Goncharuk), as well as Firstov who scored the first goal and Torpedo’s only foreign player, defenseman Bobby Nardella, also spent time in the penalty box in the match against Salavat Yulaev.

      “I want to congratulate our team on achieving a win in the opening match of the season, and a come-from-behind win at that,” said Alexey Isakov at the post-match press conference, making his KHL debut as Torpedo’s head coach. “At 2–3 it was a very difficult situation, but Alexey Kruchinin’s goal brought us back into the game; riding that emotion we were able to keep going and score the winning goal. That puck was scored on a swift attack — good interplay between two forwards and a shot off the rush. Of course, moments like that give us strength. During the game we try to stick to a certain attacking pattern, and against Salavat Yulaev you could see a lot of what our team practices in training…”

      Torpedo will play their next match on Monday, September 8, and their opponent will be St. Petersburg’s SKA — the team that in the off-season was taken over by Torpedo’s former head coach Igor Larionov. That fact alone adds spice to the upcoming confrontation. And given that the Army side began the new season with a defeat to the Shanghai Dragons (the new name of Kunlun Red Star) — 4–7, the degree of intrigue for the forthcoming clash at KRK Nagorny is simply off the charts.
