Nizhny Novgorod residents will be able to observe the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on the night of August 12–13. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium named after Grechko.
According to the planetarium’s specialists, the intensity of the Perseid meteor shower varies from year to year. In the 1990s, peaks of up to 500 meteors per hour were recorded. The last outburst of activity occurred in 2016, when up to 200 meteors per hour were observed at the peak. Under ideal conditions the Perseids can produce about 100 visible meteors per hour at their peak, potentially making it one of the top three meteor showers of the year.
This year the shower is active from July 17 to August 24, with its peak falling on August 12, but already now the brightest meteors from this shower can be observed. It is worth noting that the full moon interferes with observing faint “shooting stars.” It is best to watch the meteor shower on a clear night outside the city.
The planetarium also recommended admiring two bright “stars” in the predawn sky over the eastern horizon in the coming nights: the planets Venus and Jupiter. Each day they are drawing closer against the backdrop of the constellation Gemini and on August 12 will be at their minimum angular separation from each other.
In addition, Saturn can now be observed at night: look for it in the southeast, to the left of the Moon.
