Nizhny Novgorod infectious disease specialist Olga Karpova reminded residents of the region about the risk of infection during swimming in rivers and lakes, according to the publication "Zhivem v Nizhny."

According to the specialist, water in natural reservoirs can contain dangerous microorganisms. Among the most common are intestinal infections caused by bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli. Viruses, for example, rotaviruses and enteroviruses, as well as protozoa — Giardia and amoebas — also pose a danger.

Additionally, the doctor noted that swimming in open water can lead to skin diseases. One of the most frequent is cercarial dermatitis — a condition known as "swimmer's itch," caused by parasites penetrating the skin.

Another group of risks relates to infections of the eyes, ears, and upper respiratory tract. Bacteria and fungi that enter the body can provoke otitis externa, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis.

Olga Karpova recommended simple precautions: not to dive headfirst, not to swallow water, and to avoid swimming if there are cuts or abrasions. It is also important to choose officially approved beaches for swimming.

Special attention should be paid to the water quality: it is better to avoid blooming water bodies and those inhabited by a large number of waterfowl, as they can be carriers of various infections.

Earlier, it was reported that in Nizhny Novgorod, the upcoming workweek will again feature hot weather.
