Doctors from PIMU have, for the first time in Russia, replaced a defect in the talus bone with an implant.

On August 14, 2026, at 16:09, Society In the University Clinic of PIMU, for the first time in Russia, an operation was performed to replace a large defect in the talus bone with an individual titanium implant made using a 3D printer. This was reported by the university's press service. The operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of specialists led by orthopedic traumatologist, PhD Andrey Kopylov. A young resident of the Nizhny Novgorod region sought help at the clinic. For several years, he had suffered from severe pain in the ankle joint. Examination revealed severe destruction of the talus bone, affecting the cartilage and bone tissue.

To preserve the mobility of the leg and the quality of life of the man, the specialists designed an individual prosthesis.

"The patient has been under our observation since 2021. Initially, he underwent arthroscopy of the joints. After the surgeries, there was a temporary improvement, but over time the pathological process continued to progress," Kopylov said.

The design of the titanium alloy component was carried out in collaboration with IT specialists from Novosibirsk. The complex geometry of the product allowed for precise replacement of the defect. The special structure of the prosthesis enables the patient's own bone tissue to grow inside, ensuring reliable fixation. The operation lasted about an hour and went without complications. A few days later, the patient was discharged. He is currently moving on crutches and undergoing rehabilitation. According to the doctors' assessment, healing is progressing well, and after completing the recovery, the patient will be able to return to his usual daily activities.

It was previously reported that PIMU doctors were the first in Russia to implant next-generation 32-contact neurostimulators in patients with spinal cord injuries and diseases.
