Ten residents of Nizhny Novgorod with obesity underwent gastric reduction surgery under compulsory health insurance.
August 3, 2026 17:43 Society Since the beginning of 2026, the city clinical hospital No. 40 in Nizhny Novgorod has performed 10 bariatric surgeries on patients with morbid obesity. As reported by the regional health ministry, all interventions were conducted free of charge under the compulsory medical insurance policy, provided there were medical indications.
Morbid obesity is classified as a chronic disease and significantly increases the risk of developing type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, and other severe complications.
According to the medical institution, surgery is resorted to when lifestyle changes, diet, medications, and other treatment methods do not help achieve the desired results. After the surgical intervention, patients continue to be regularly monitored by doctors. Specialists track the weight loss process, assess changes in health status, and adjust further treatment if necessary.
As patients lose weight, they report that it becomes easier to perform daily tasks, physical activity increases, and overall well-being improves. This helps to consolidate the treatment results and reduce the risk of complications.
According to Olga Manuilenko, the chief physician of the city clinical hospital No. 40, one of the patients after surgery and following all the specialists' recommendations was able to lose more than 40 kilograms and continues to maintain the achieved result.
She emphasized that bariatric surgery is not a way to lose weight quickly, but a method for treating severe forms of obesity. The decision for surgical intervention is made only after a complete examination and in the presence of medical indications. The operation marks the beginning of a long-term collaborative effort between the patient and specialists. To maintain the results for a long time, it is important to follow doctors' recommendations and change habitual lifestyles.
The regional health ministry reported that bariatric surgeries in the region are performed not only at GKB No. 40 but also at the N.A. Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital, GKB No. 5, and GKB No. 33 in Nizhny Novgorod. Patients receive referrals for surgical treatment after consulting an endocrinologist or surgeon and undergoing the necessary examinations.
The availability of high-tech medical assistance in the region is growing annually. This work aligns with the objectives of the national project "Sustained and Active Life," which has been implemented since 2025.
It was previously reported that up to 30% of the adult population in the Nizhny Novgorod region suffers from obesity. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
