      Nizhny Novgorod oncologists have started performing thyroid surgeries using a modern neuromonitoring system that helps preserve patients' voices. The first 15 interventions have already been successfully completed without complications, reports Stacionar-Press.

      The new equipment allows surgeons to locate the recurrent laryngeal nerve in real-time even in deep tissue layers. This significantly reduces the risk of accidental damage to it – one of the most serious complications of thyroid surgeries that can lead to voice loss. According to the head of the department, Sergey Dmitriev, such technology is now considered the global standard for surgical treatment.

      In the near future, specialists at the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Clinical Oncology expect to perform up to 400 such surgeries annually. This volume will fully meet the needs of the region's residents. Doctors also note successes in the early diagnosis of diseases. Previously, thyroid tumors were detected at an average size of about three centimeters, but now they are identified at a stage of about 11 millimeters. This allows for organ-preserving surgeries and significantly speeds up patient recovery.
