Restorer students will restore the doors of the ancient school in Nizhny Novgorod.
On June 9, 2026, at 07:22 Society 12 students from Moscow, Vladimir, and Nizhny Novgorod will participate in the restoration of historical doors in the building of the former Mariinsky Women's School. The work will take place as part of a field school for wood restoration, scheduled for June 20-30. The project is organized by the Union of Restorers of Russia with the support of the Moscow government.
As reported by NIA "Nizhny Novgorod," the main object of the work is the historical doors of the assembly hall of the main building of the Nizhny Novgorod State Architectural and Construction University. The building is located in the former Mariinsky Women's School and has the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance. It retains the atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Nizhny Novgorod. The building where the restoration will take place is associated with important stages in the development of education in the city. Originally, the mansion belonged to merchant Afanasy Rychin. In 1859, the Mariinsky Women's School for girls of all classes opened here, and in 1870 it was transformed into a women's gymnasium. After the revolution, a secondary women's school operated in the building, and since 1930 it has been occupied by the engineering and construction institute, now known as NNGASU.
The mentors of the school will be specialists from the Restoration School of the Agency for the Preservation and Development of Historical Environment Objects in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Among them are senior master-mentor, certified restorer of wooden architecture monuments Evgeny Pantsyev, master-mentor Alexander Avvakumov, and master-mentor Alexey Gonzov.
Over ten days, participants will undergo a complete cycle of restoration work. They will conduct inspections and measurements, clean surfaces from old coatings and contaminants, remove damaged wood, strengthen the structure, and fill in cracks and chips. In conclusion, the doors will be sanded, treated with antiseptic, toned, and covered with protective varnish.
The result of the project will be not only the updated doors of the assembly hall but also prepared recommendations for their further preservation. At the end of the school, participants will receive diplomas.
Earlier, it was reported that in the Nizhny Novgorod region, there are plans to restore 1,000 cultural heritage sites by 2030. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
