Nizhny Novgorod residents tried their hand at national sports at the demonstration site in the "Meshchersky" Sports and Recreation Complex.

      On June 8, a demonstration site for national sports was organized at the "Meschersky" physical culture and health complex in Nizhny Novgorod. Five disciplines were presented: lapta, gorodki, tavreli, sambo, and kila. Everyone interested was able to get acquainted with the sports traditions of the country, try their hand at various sports, including VR-lapta, as well as meet the standards of the All-Russian physical culture and sports complex "Ready for Labor and Defense." The idea of organizing the demonstration site originated at the Council of Legislators of the Volga Federal District in Penza in the summer of 2025. In a roundtable format, the legislators of the Volga Federal District discussed the work on popularizing national sports, the challenges that arise at the regional and federal levels, and possible ways to solve them. "In each region of the Volga Federal District, there are beloved national sports that embody the wisdom of our ancestors. These simple activities, which do not require expensive equipment, have been honed over centuries, fostering agility, strength, team spirit among the youth, and supporting health and longevity. For example, the ancient team game of kila has been successfully revived in the Nizhny Novgorod region. We take pride in the great traditions of gorodki sports, the capital of which is rightly considered to be Penza. I believe we need to replicate the successful Mordovian experience of training masters in lapta throughout the entire district. We should support the incredibly popular wrestling on belts in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. By sharing experiences in supporting various types of national sports, we are collectively addressing the common state task of their preservation and development," noted the chairman of the Council of Legislators of the Volga Federal District, chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Yevgeny Lyulin. The development of national sports also addresses the tasks of implementing the people's program of the "United Russia" party. "It is important for us to give national sports a powerful impetus for development — this is our cultural code, and such support is embedded in the people's program of 'United Russia.' We see how interested residents are in sports: already more than 63% of Nizhny Novgorod residents regularly engage in physical culture, and many facilities are being built in the region — from GTO sites to large sports complexes," emphasized the deputy chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Alexey Antonov. The Minister of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Dmitry Kabailo, also highlighted the importance of developing national and traditionally Russian sports. "Currently, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, we are systematically working on the development of national sports. We are integrating this direction into mass physical culture events, organizing master classes and competitions. At the same time, we are using new formats that are interesting to the youth, combining sports and IT technologies. Together with other departments, we are developing robogorodki, VR-lapta, and other directions that combine computer games and physical competitions," said Dmitry Kabailo.

      The organizers of the event are the Council of Legislators of the Volga Federal District, the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Ministry of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Project Office of the ANO "Center for Management and Development of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod Region," the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese, the "Meschersky" sports complex, and the sports federations of the Nizhny Novgorod region by sports.
