      The Nizhny Novgorod region has found itself among the leading regions for the incidence of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), more commonly known as hantavirus. This was reported by the Telegram channel "Bokal presseka," citing data from Rospotrebnadzor.

      According to the agency, in 2025, the incidence rate in the region was 14.92 cases per 100,000 population. This is 14.2% higher than the level in 2024 and 20.7% above the long-term average.

      The causative agent of the disease is hantavirus. Specialists note that it should not be confused with the viruses that caused outbreaks of diseases in South American countries, as they are different varieties of pathogens. The main carrier of the infection is considered to be the red field vole. This small rodent is the natural reservoir of the virus. Favorable conditions for the habitation of voles have developed in many regions of the Volga Federal District, including the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      According to specialists, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is most often detected in pensioners and unemployed citizens. Doctors remind of the necessity to observe preventive measures when visiting forests, summer cottages, and during cleaning of premises where rodents may have been present.
