Evgeny Chintsov participated in the opening ceremony of the monument to the academician, founder of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Andrey Gaponov-Grekhov.

On June 9, 2026, a solemn ceremony was held to unveil a monument to the founder and first director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov, in the square named after A.V. Gaponov-Grekhov at the intersection of Ulyanova and Proviantskaya streets. The monument was erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist-radiophysicist, celebrated on June 7, 1926. The event was attended by the first deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Andrei Gneushev, the chief federal inspector for the Nizhny Novgorod region Alexander Murzin, senator of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Krasnov, chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma Evgeny Chintsov, mayor of Nizhny Novgorod Yuri Shalabaev, scientific director of the IPF RAS, academician Alexander Litvak, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Nizhny Novgorod Sergey Malov, the leadership and staff of the institute, representatives of the scientific community, the deputy corps, relatives of the academician, and residents of the city. "There are people who enter history even during their lifetime. The name of the outstanding radiophysicist Andrei Viktorovich Gaponov-Grekhov stands among the great world scientists. He glorified the Russian scientific school, raised a whole generation of renowned scientists, imparting not only knowledge but also his dedication to the cause. Nizhny Novgorod became his home, a place where his grand scientific projects were born. And today our mission is to preserve the memory of this great man. His name is forever inscribed in the history of domestic science and, of course, in the history of the Nizhny Novgorod region!" said the first deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Andrei Gneushev. The installation of the monument completed the formation of a unified memorial space dedicated to Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov. "Here Andrei Viktorovich lived, worked nearby, and here the scientific school was formed that glorified Nizhny Novgorod far beyond its borders. This monument speaks of the city's gratitude to the man who created its scientific glory, of the memory that should live not only in books and archives but also in the urban environment — next to us, before the eyes of new generations. Let schoolchildren, students, and young scientists passing by see: great science does not begin somewhere far away. It is born here — on Nizhny Novgorod soil. I am very glad that we managed to open the monument precisely on the 100th anniversary of Andrei Viktorovich's birth. On behalf of the City Duma and personally, I thank everyone who helped realize this initiative!" said the chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma Evgeny Chintsov. The initiative to install the monument came from the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and was unanimously supported by the deputies of the City Duma at a meeting on May 27, 2026. "The name of academician Andrei Viktorovich Gaponov-Grekhov is rightly inscribed not only in the annals of Nizhny Novgorod but also in world science. He was an outstanding scientist, the founder of an entire scientific direction in the field of radiophysics and plasma physics. It was on Nizhny Novgorod soil that he founded the Institute of Applied Physics, which under his leadership became one of the leading physical centers in the country. The monument that has appeared here is not just a tribute to the past. It is a symbol. A symbol that Nizhny Novgorod was, is, and will always be a forge of advanced ideas and breakthrough technologies. And the fact that the monument is installed in our city, which Gaponov-Grekhov glorified with his scientific works, is absolutely logical and just. May this monument serve as a reminder for the younger generation: science begins here, on our land, and greatness is made up of dedication to one's work and love for one's native city," emphasized the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod Yuri Shalabaev. The continuation of the events for the 100th anniversary of the academician was a scientific session of the bureau of the Department of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
