Cercariae worms attacked bathers in Nizhny Novgorod.

      June 9, 2026 16:57 Society Vacationers complained about symptoms of cercarial dermatitis, allegedly appearing after swimming in Lake Svetloyar (Sormovo). The disease, caused by the larvae of flatworms, was contracted by a child, writes the Telegram channel "My Nizhny Novgorod."

      As clarified by the representative of the regional healthcare sector Alexey Nikонов, the body of water where parasites may inhabit can be identified by overgrown areas of shallow water, as well as by ducks floating in it.

      Before resting at the lake, it is advisable to think about prevention: before entering the water, apply cream with oil or petroleum jelly on the body—this makes it harder for the larvae to penetrate the skin. After swimming, one should take a shower or wipe down with a dry, rough towel, and it is advisable to change clothes.

      The specialist reminded that re-infection with cercarial dermatitis poses a risk of severe allergic reactions, up to anaphylaxis.

      Global prevention that concerns everyone: do not feed wild ducks in popular swimming areas, emphasized Alexey Nikонов.
