Better to boil: Nizhny Novgorod residents were informed about the results of the tap water study.

On June 9, 2026, at 10:00, Society Residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region have been advised to boil drinking water. This recommendation was published in the Max channel by medical expert Alexey Nikонов. The chief editor of MIA "Statsionar-press" reached this conclusion after studying the state report from the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor for 2025. According to the document, specialists examined more than 6,500 water samples from water supply sources last year. The share of samples that did not meet hygiene standards for sanitary-chemical indicators was 23.5% compared to 25.4% in 2024. For microbiological indicators, the figure decreased to 2.8% (4.8% in 2024). No samples were found to be non-compliant with parasitological indicators. The report also notes that the problem of naturally high iron content and overall water hardness in underground sources remains relevant for the region. Separate data on drinking water was provided, as the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" editorial team discovered in the Rospotrebnadzor report. In 2025, the share of samples in the Nizhny Novgorod region that did not meet hygiene standards for microbiological indicators was 2.2% (1.8% in 2024), while in Nizhny Novgorod, it was 0.9% (0.8% in 2024). For sanitary-chemical indicators, this figure for the region reached 10.2% (13.8% in 2024), while for Nizhny Novgorod, it was 15.2% (3.0% in 2024). Over the past five years, no non-compliance with parasitological indicators has been recorded. Commenting on the data, Nikонов noted that boiling water for 2-5 minutes not only kills microbes but also helps "bind" up to 80-90% of microplastics. According to him, the resulting scale encapsulates plastic particles, after which the water can be filtered through a paper or cloth filter. He also pointed out that water in plastic bottles is not a benchmark for safety, as micro- and nanoparticles of plastic, as well as phthalates and bisphenol, can leach from the containers, especially with temperature fluctuations. For home use, the expert recommends choosing glass or ceramic pitchers, and for transport, reusable bottles made of high-quality stainless steel or heavy glass. Residents of industrial regions and areas near agricultural lands are advised to use filters with high-density activated carbon or reverse osmosis systems. Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor allowed swimming at 11 out of 26 beaches in the Nizhny Novgorod region. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
