A monument to Academician Gaponov-Grekhov was erected in the center of Nizhny Novgorod.

      On June 9, 2026, at 17:08, Society The Chairman of the Duma of Nizhny Novgorod, Evgeny Chintsov, took part in the ceremony of unveiling a monument to the founder and first director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod, Andrey Gaponov-Grekhov. The solemn event took place on June 9 in the square named after the scientist at the intersection of Ulyanova and Proviantskaya streets. The monument was installed to mark the centenary of the birth of the outstanding radio physicist, celebrated on June 7.

      The ceremony was attended by the first deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Andrey Gneushev, the chief federal inspector for the region, Alexander Murzin, senator of the Federation Council Dmitry Krasnov, the head of the city Yuri Shalabaev, relatives of the academician, and residents of the city. Andrey Gneushev noted that the name of Andrey Gaponov-Grekhov stands among the great world scientists. According to him, the academician made a significant contribution to the development of the Russian scientific school, raised an entire generation of researchers, and glorified domestic science. The first deputy governor emphasized that Nizhny Novgorod became a hometown for the scientist, where many of his scientific projects were realized.

      “Today our mission is to preserve the memory of this great man,” said the first deputy governor.

      The installation of the monument completed the formation of a unified memorial space dedicated to Andrey Gaponov-Grekhov. As Evgeny Chintsov noted, it was in this area that the scientist lived and worked, and here the scientific school was formed, which gained fame far beyond Nizhny Novgorod.

      “This monument speaks of the city's gratitude to the person who created its scientific glory, of the memory that should live not only in books and archives but also in the urban environment—next to us, before the eyes of new generations,” said the chairman of the city Duma.

      He also expressed satisfaction that the monument was unveiled in time for the centenary of the academician's birth and thanked everyone who participated in the implementation of the initiative. The idea of installing the monument belonged to the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At a meeting on May 27, 2026, the deputies of the Nizhny Novgorod city Duma unanimously supported this proposal. The head of the city, Yuri Shalabaev, emphasized that the name of Andrey Gaponov-Grekhov rightfully occupies a place not only in the history of Nizhny Novgorod but also in world science. He reminded that it was on Nizhny Novgorod soil that the Institute of Applied Physics was created, which became one of the leading scientific centers in the country.

      “The monument that appeared here is not just a tribute to the past. It is a symbol. A symbol that Nizhny Novgorod was, is, and will always be a forge of advanced ideas and breakthrough technologies,” said the mayor.
