How to avoid overheating in the workplace: recommendations from Rospotrebnadzor

May 20, 2026 14:19 Society Anomalously hot weather has arrived in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Under such conditions, it seems that maintaining good health is only possible in a cool office with air conditioning. However, that alone is not enough. The Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing has published recommendations to help avoid overheating and maintain health in the workplace.

When the air temperature in the room rises, employers are advised to reduce the length of the workday. If the temperature approaches 28.5 degrees Celsius, the workday should be shortened by one hour; at 29 degrees, by two hours; and at 30.5 degrees, by four hours.

Special requirements apply to outdoor work. When the outdoor temperature is 32.5 degrees Celsius or higher, the duration of continuous work should be 15-20 minutes, followed by a rest period of at least 10-12 minutes in cooled areas. Workers in special clothing for protection against heat radiation can work for 4-5 hours per shift; without it, for 1.5-2 hours.

To prevent dehydration, it is also important to properly organize and adhere to a drinking regime. The recommended temperature for water, drinks, and tea is 10-15 degrees Celsius. Replenishing the loss of salts and trace elements lost through sweat should be done with salted water, mineral alkaline water, fermented milk drinks, whey or skim milk, juices, vitamin drinks, and oxygen-protein cocktails.

To support good hydration, one should drink frequently and in small amounts. When the air temperature exceeds 30 degrees and performing work of moderate intensity, it is necessary to drink at least 0.5 liters of water per hour—approximately one cup every 20 minutes.
