What to do in case of a burn from hogweed: doctors' instructions
May 15, 2026 10:17 Society The Sosnovsky hogweed is dangerous not because of itself, but due to the reaction that occurs after skin contact with sunlight. This was explained by Ulyana Makhova, an assistant at the Department of Polyclinic Therapy at the Pirogov University Institute of Clinical Medicine.
Why hogweed causes burns
The sap of the plant contains furocoumarins. These substances do not damage the skin by themselves, but sharply increase its sensitivity to ultraviolet light. After contact, a person may feel nothing, but under the influence of sunlight, a photochemical reaction begins. As a result, a burn develops, comparable in depth to a thermal burn — up to II and even IIIa degree.
The risk is lower in cloudy weather, but it does not completely disappear, as scattered rays are also dangerous. At the same time, furocoumarins can remain on the skin for up to 48 hours.
Symptoms may appear after two days
Symptoms do not manifest immediately. From the moment of contact to the first signs, it can take from several hours to two days.
First, there is a latent period without unpleasant sensations. Then redness with clear borders, itching, and burning appear. After 24-48 hours, blisters filled with clear fluid form on the skin, which can merge and reach significant sizes. Healing often takes a month or more.
In extensive lesions, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills may occur. After the skin heals, dark spots may sometimes remain, lasting for several months.
What to do after contact with hogweed
First aid should be provided as soon as possible. It is necessary to thoroughly wash the sap off with running water and soap, and if possible, take a shower. Then it is important to avoid sun exposure for two to three days and cover the affected area with clothing or a sterile bandage.
To reduce itching and swelling, antihistamines are acceptable, and for pain, analgesics. A water-based burn treatment with panthenol or dexpanthenol can be applied to the skin. A cold compress for 15-20 minutes can help reduce pain and swelling. It is strictly forbidden to rub the skin, open blisters, apply greasy ointments, oils, or creams, as well as use products containing urea. This can worsen the damage and increase the risk of infection.
When to urgently see a doctor
It is recommended to see a doctor regardless of the area of damage. Treatment for photodermatitis is conducted in a multidisciplinary hospital.
Emergency medical assistance is required for burns covering more than 10% of the body surface, damage to the face, eyes, or mucous membranes, sap entering the eyes, severe pain, high fever, or confusion. Burns pose particular danger to children.
Let us remind you that the Sosnovsky hogweed is included in the list of dangerous invasive plants in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The formation of the registry is enshrined in regional law, which was adopted by the deputies of the Legislative Assembly in February 2026. In March, it was signed by Governor Gleb Nikitin.
In addition, fines of up to 50,000 rubles for individuals and up to 700,000 rubles for legal entities are provided for inaction in combating hogweed.
