Professor NNSU explained the appropriateness of the name of the Ice Arena at Strelka.
May 8, 2026 11:57 Society Four-time European champion in radio sports, honored worker of physical culture of the Russian Federation, the first dean of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports of NNGU named after N. I. Lobachevsky, honored professor of NNGU Vadim Kuzmin, in a conversation with pravda-nn.ru, assessed the name given to the new Ice Palace at Strelka - "Volga Arena."
"I am against the thoughtless use of foreign words and transliterations in everyday language. In this case, however, the use of Latin letters does not evoke negative feelings in me, as their use is justified. It is not only about the fact that VOLGA is a registered trademark of a car and the name is commercial. International matches will be held in Nizhny Novgorod, there may be an enhancement of the 'Torpedo' team with foreign players, and tourists from near and far abroad will surely show interest in the ice palace. In this regard, the transliteration of the word 'Volga' into Latin letters is quite appropriate, even beneficial - as an indication that we are not closing ourselves off in our own space, we are open to representatives of other countries and other cultures.
I would like to emphasize that in the Continental Hockey League, where 'Torpedo' plays, the names on the players' jerseys are written in Latin letters. This is necessary for the promotion of the KHL abroad - there can be no question of any disregard for the Russian language. The question of the name 'VOLGA Arena' can be viewed from the same position."
