Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved a man with pneumonia in his only lung.

      On May 7, 2026, at 11:25, Society: In the infectious disease hospital No. 2 in Nizhny Novgorod, a 65-year-old man with severe pneumonia in his only lung was saved. His left lung was removed back in the 1980s due to tuberculosis, so inflammation of the right lung immediately became a critical situation.

      Prior to this, the patient was undergoing treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia at the Semashko regional hospital. At the end of March, his condition sharply worsened: shortness of breath intensified, and signs of respiratory failure appeared. Doctors suspected pneumonia and urgently transferred him to the specialized infectious disease hospital.

      Upon admission, the man was in serious condition and immediately found himself in intensive care. Despite treatment, respiratory failure continued to worsen. The medical team decided to connect him to a mechanical ventilator, using a rare technique of single-lung ventilation for such cases.

      "The turning point came two weeks later: on the fourteenth day, the patient was successfully weaned off the ventilator and transferred to high-flow oxygenation through a tracheostomy. Gradually, respiratory function stabilized, and by the twenty-sixth day, the tracheostomy was removed — the Nizhny Novgorod resident was able to completely discontinue respiratory support," reported the chief physician of the hospital, Olga Makhara.

      Currently, the man continues his recovery in a therapeutic profile hospital, undergoing a rehabilitation course. Increasing the availability of high-tech medical care for residents of the region remains one of the tasks implemented within the framework of the national project "Sustained and Active Life."
