Doctors at the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital have performed a liver transplant on a patient for the first time. The operation took place on April 12, lasted about five hours, and was successful. Thanks to the skill of the medical team, a 49-year-old woman with cirrhosis was saved. The Nizhny Novgorod resident has already been discharged from the hospital; however, specialists will regularly monitor her recovery process. The regional health ministry reminded that the Nizhny Novgorod region continues to actively expand its transplantation assistance program with the support of experts from the National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs named after Academician V.I. Shumakov. Since November of last year, kidney and pancreas transplant surgeries have been included in the practice of doctors at the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital. Liver transplant surgeries are another new type of high-tech medical assistance for the region's budget healthcare system. "The patient who successfully underwent the life-saving operation had been suffering from liver cirrhosis since 2019. Due to the progression of the disease, her condition deteriorated progressively, requiring hospitalizations for intensive treatment, which, unfortunately, only stabilized her condition for a short time. At the end of 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod resident was placed on the waiting list for the operation, and by March, the opportunity for transplantation arose," said Acting Director of the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital Sergey Gamayunov. According to him, the transplanted liver is currently functioning, and the patient feels satisfactory. If the recovery process continues without complications, the woman can soon expect to return to her normal lifestyle. The surgical intervention was performed by a team of four surgeons - Vladimir Zagainov, Denis Kuchin, Alexey Moiseev, and Sergey Gamayunov. In addition to the surgeons, anesthesiologists-resuscitators, operating room nurses, gastroenterologists, diagnostic service specialists, and many other medical workers were involved in the preparation for the operation, its execution, and the subsequent care of the patient. "The liver transplantation successfully performed at the regional hospital has created a fully closed cycle of assistance for patients requiring liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants - from establishing the need for intervention and placing them on the waiting list to post-transplant dynamic monitoring," emphasized the chief freelance transplantologist of the Nizhny Novgorod region's health ministry Vladimir Zagainov.
Let us remind you that today the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, along with the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology, is developing as a participant in the flagship regional project "City of Health." The project was launched at the initiative of the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Gleb Nikitin to make high-tech medical assistance as accessible as possible for adult residents of Nizhny Novgorod and to concentrate many of its directions in a single territory. The initiative has received support from the Government of Russia and the Ministry of Health of Russia, as well as federal co-financing.
Organ transplantation is one of the most high-tech types of medical assistance. Efforts to increase the availability of such assistance to residents of the region are being carried out in accordance with the goals and objectives of the national project "Sustainable and Active Life," which is being implemented by order of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The national project covers all areas of work in the industry - from modernizing primary healthcare to rehabilitation.
