Nizhny Novgorod residents were warned about the risk of infertility due to phthalates in branded perfumes.
On May 2, 2026, at 12:57 Society Phthalates capable of negatively affecting the human body have been found in perfumes from well-known brands Bvlgari, Zielinski & Rozen, and Calvin Klein. This was reported by Alexey Nikонов, a representative of the healthcare sector of the Nizhny Novgorod region, on his MAX channel. Allegedly, such substances can have a destructive effect on DNA and provoke infertility in both men and women. "Phthalates in perfume can indeed be present; they ensure the longevity of the fragrance while acting as 'hormonal hackers': they mimic hormones and can disrupt our endocrine system," Nikонов explained. He noted that manufacturers often do not disclose the full composition of their products, limiting themselves to the general term "fragrance composition," which does not allow consumers to know exactly which components are included. To reduce potential harm, the specialist advises adhering to the "outstretched arm" rule and not spraying fragrance directly on the neck or face area. According to him, it is safer to apply perfume to clothing or hair from a distance to avoid inhaling a "cloud." Additionally, it is not advisable to use perfume in small and poorly ventilated spaces. People with allergic rhinitis, eczema, or chronic cough should avoid such perfumes. In this case, he suggests choosing natural alternatives labeled phthalate-free. Earlier, residents of Nizhny Novgorod were advised to refrain from heavy perfumes in the heat. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
