The snow helped preserve the crops in the Kstovo district.
April 10, 2026 16:35 Society Abundant snowfall last winter brought not only challenges but also noticeable benefits for agriculture. This was reported by the head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, who noted that the dense snow cover helped preserve crops in the Kstovo district. As a result, the soil did not freeze, which provided favorable conditions for winter crops.
As reported on social media by the city head, agricultural enterprises are completing preparations for the spring sowing campaign. Farmers are checking seeds and actively purchasing necessary fertilizers.
The readiness of equipment for fieldwork has already reached almost 90%. It is expected that all inspections and preparations of the equipment will be completed by the end of the week.
According to Yuri Shalabaev, this year the total area of sowing will be about 19,500 hectares. Of these, 6,400 hectares are allocated for winter wheat, which is used for the production of bread, pasta, cereals, and animal feed.
The area for spring crops is expected to exceed 13,000 hectares. In particular, more than 6,200 hectares will be occupied by grain and leguminous crops, while nearly 7,000 hectares will be dedicated to forage grasses.
In addition, farmers in 2026 purchased new varieties of spring crop seeds. Authorities hope that this will increase yields. "We hope that the weather will be favorable and create good conditions for agricultural producers at all stages — from sowing to plant maturation," noted Yuri Shalabaev.
