Honored Professor of NNSU Nikolai Fortunatov passed away in Nizhny Novgorod.

      Doctor of Philology, member of the Union of Writers of Russia, honored professor of Nizhny Novgorod University Nikolai Fortunatov passed away in Nizhny Novgorod. He died at the age of 95. For over 30 years, he headed the Department of Russian Literature at the Institute of Philology and Journalism of NNSU. This was reported by the university rector Oleg Trofimov on his Telegram channel. Nikolai Mikhailovich was born in Stalingrad (Volgograd) on August 27, 1931. In 1956, he graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Gorky State University. He then worked in a school but returned to the university and taught there until the last days of his life. Under his leadership, the Department of Russian Literature became one of the leading scientific centers in the country in the field of literary studies. Nikolai Mikhailovich brought the scientific conference "Boldin Readings" to an international level and created a center for literary local studies. An article about Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's story "The Black Monk" sparked interest from Dmitri Shostakovich, leading to correspondence between the scholar and the composer. Nikolai Mikhailovich actively responded to contemporary ideas and trends. In 1999, he created the first distance learning course at the university. At that time, the idea of such education was just emerging. He also developed an interactive course "The History of Russia as Reflected in Russian Literature." Under his scientific supervision, a textbook "The History of Russian Literature of the 19th Century" was created, which is currently one of the main textbooks for universities.

      Nikolai Mikhailovich was a person of broad cultural horizons, who preserved the best traditions of domestic literary studies while shaping the image of a new—modern—science of literature. For many generations of philology students, he was also a beloved lecturer, whose classes were sought after because they were unique and became works of art in their own right, emphasized Oleg Trofimov. The rector expressed condolences on behalf of the entire university staff to Nikolai Mikhailovich's family and friends.

      The funeral service and farewell to the professor will take place on April 9 at 11:30 at the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God on Zeleny Syezd, 3. The editorial office of IA "In the City N" expresses sincere condolences to Nikolai Mikhailovich's family and friends.
