Drinking alcohol can pose a serious threat to the health of people with diabetes. In some cases it can lead to hypoglycemia — a dangerous condition in which blood sugar levels drop sharply. Narcologist Vitaliy Kholdin told 360.ru how to avoid such complications.

Hypoglycemia is a common complication of diabetes mellitus that can be fatal. It can cause cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or coma. Alcohol increases the risk of this condition because the liver, when processing alcohol, stops releasing glucose, leading to a sharp drop in blood sugar levels.

Kholdin emphasized that the risk of hypoglycemia is particularly high for those who take insulin or blood-sugar-lowering drugs, engage in sports, or are undernourished. The danger is exacerbated by the fact that the symptoms of alcohol intoxication (drowsiness, sweating, dizziness) are similar to the signs of hypoglycemia. This makes timely diagnosis and assistance more difficult.

It is especially dangerous to drink on an empty stomach or after physical activity. In such cases, bystanders may mistakenly take a person's condition for ordinary alcohol intoxication and fail to provide the necessary help.

Kholdin also noted that situations in which a person drinks on an empty stomach and immediately goes to sleep are particularly risky. This can lead to serious consequences if help is not provided in time.
