Magnesium, known as the "mineral of life," plays an important role in the body, participating in the fight against stress, energy production, calcium stabilization and other processes. In autumn and winter the need for magnesium increases, which has led to growth in the market for magnesium supplements. But should you rely on "miracle pills" and who are they useful for?

As Andrey Kondrakhin, a clinical pharmacologist and therapist, told 360.ru, magnesium is important for preventing kidney stones, stabilizing calcium, relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. It also aids digestion, muscle relaxation and improved mood. Magnesium is involved in collagen synthesis, which is important for the health of the skin, joints and other tissues.

Lyudmila Lapa, a physician-therapist of the highest qualification, clarified that doctors prescribe magnesium for deficiency, which manifests as cramps, fatigue, poor sleep and other symptoms. It is especially useful for pregnant women with high blood pressure. Magnesium is also recommended for osteoarthritis and to improve the condition of bones and joints. For children with hyperactivity and poor sleep, magnesium is often prescribed in combination with B vitamins.

Magnesium is available in different forms, such as citrate and chelates. Magnesium citrate is absorbed quickly, but should be taken in short courses. Chelated forms are considered more effective and safer. Doctors recommend taking magnesium in the evening 1–2 hours before sleep to improve sleep quality and relax muscles.

However, there is a danger of overdose. The first symptom of magnesium excess is diarrhea and lowered blood pressure. An excess of magnesium can also cause weakness, fatigue, headaches, vascular spasms and poor sleep. Therefore it is important to follow the dosage and take magnesium only as prescribed by a doctor.
