In Nizhny Novgorod, two medical staff members fell victim to fraudsters while attempting to book a package at a boarding house in Abkhazia. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The two friends, of pre-retirement age, decided to go on a trip together to the Transcaucasus and found a suitable package on a website. They made a payment — 53,000 rubles — and received a voucher confirming the reservation. However, upon arrival at the boarding house it turned out that their names were not on the check-in lists, and the voucher proved to be counterfeit.
After that, a man contacted them, offering, for an additional fee, to accommodate them elsewhere. Only then did they realize they had been deceived. A criminal case has been opened under the article "fraud," and law enforcement officers are searching for the scammers.
The police reminded the public of the importance of being cautious when booking packages. Scammers often use various schemes to extract money from trusting people. They may send enticing offers via email, messaging apps, or publish them on social networks and dubious websites.
To avoid becoming a victim of fraud, follow a few simple rules:
- Book packages only on official websites of reputable travel agencies.
- Before purchasing tickets, carefully study information about the resort and the company you plan to work with. Check whether the tour operator is registered in the federal register.
- Never follow links from advertising mailings. Type the website address manually.
If you encounter fraud, contact the police immediately.
Recall that earlier a Nizhny Novgorod travel agent was sentenced to four years in a penal colony for deceiving 29 people.
