Nizhny Novgorod's Torpedo failed to convert their chances and lost to Moscow's CSKA by the narrowest of margins — 0-1.
The teams started actively. However, neither side managed to open the scoring in the first period.
The start of the second period was productive: already at 52 seconds Dmitry Buchelnikov beat Denis Kostin. He was assisted by former Torpedo player Nikolai Kovalenko. Alexey Isakov's men were unable to turn the tide in the second stanza.
They also failed to equalize in the final twenty minutes. In the third period the Nizhny Novgorod side launched a final assault. Several times the Avtozavod players could have scored, but the puck never found the CSKA net. In the closing moments Bogdan Konyushkov, in a heavy incident, prevented the opponent from scoring into an empty net. How badly the defender was injured is not yet known. The match ended 0-1 in favor of CSKA.
This is the sixth defeat for the Nizhny Novgorod team in their last seven matches and their fifth consecutive home loss.
"There are no indifferent people in the team, everyone is trying, everyone is working. Yes, the result is negative. The only way out of this situation is team work. We will prepare for the next game," the head coach commented on the match.
On October 19 the Nizhny Novgorod side will meet Togliatti's Lada again.
