
Institute for Demographic Development: 84% of young people value family
ANO "Institute for Demographic Development" conducted a study dedicated to examining the values and views of young people on building relationships. The survey took place from September 17 to 20 as part of the gathering of the World Festival of Youth in Nizhny Novgorod. More than 500 people aged 18 to 35 from 104 Russian cities and 48 countries participated.
Family was named the most important life value by 84% of young Russians. Other priorities included self-fulfillment (45%), career (36%) and children (29%). Participants from other countries also singled out family (82%), but more often noted education (48%), material goods (38%) and religion (24%).
For Russian youth, the key components of family were common goals and interests (61%), emotional closeness (57%) and family traditions (34%). Among foreign peers, these figures were 46%, 49% and 22%, respectively.
Almost half of respondents (47%) look for a partner while studying or at work, 23% — among friends. Youth from other countries are more likely to meet people via apps and social networks (18% versus 11% among Russians).
The factors most often cited as hindering the building of happy relationships were lack of time (24%) and lack of understanding and emotional support from a partner (32%). Distrust was also noted (29%), as well as financial difficulties (16%).
When examining gender differences, it turned out that both men and women equally often face lack of time (24%). However, men more often mentioned financial difficulties (21% versus 14% among women), while women more often cited lack of understanding and emotional support (33% versus 28% among men).
The main barriers to starting relationships named by Russians were fear of rejection (41%) and lack of initiative from the opposite sex (31%). Women more often noted the lack of suitable places to meet (13% versus 8% among men), while men more often pointed to fear of rejection (45% versus 38% among women) and lack of time (21% versus 16%).
Among key values for men were career (39%) and finances (37%), whereas women more often chose travel (58%) and self-fulfillment (47%).
When describing the ideal family, women more often spoke of common goals and interests (62% versus 43% among men), material well‑being (41% versus 22%), formal marriage (21% versus 13%) and emotional closeness (57% versus 49%). Men, in turn, more often associate family with the birth and upbringing of children (36% versus 29%) and family traditions (34% versus 30%).
According to the Institute’s director, Evgeny Zhuravlyov, the survey results formed the basis for a new direction in the organization’s work. A Telegram channel called "Based on Love" has already been created, aimed at developing emotional literacy, supporting young people amid information noise and encouraging open communication. In the future, offline events and online projects are planned for comprehensive support of youth.
Work to stabilize the demographic situation in the region is being carried out in accordance with the goals and objectives of the national project "Family." By decision of the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, the 2025–2030 period has been declared the Five-Year Family period in the region.
