Geely is considering launching car production in Nizhny Novgorod.

      Economy Chinese automaker Geely intends to organize the production of its cars at a manufacturing site in Nizhny Novgorod. This was reported by Kommersant, citing industry sources.

      It is assumed that this concerns a possible partnership with JSC "Passenger Car Production" (PLA), which owns the rights to the "Volga" brand and uses the capacities of the Nizhny Novgorod automobile plant. Until 2022, this plant assembled cars of the Volkswagen Group. In 2024 it was reported that PLA rents the plant's passenger-car assembly line.

      According to the publication, Geely initially planned to localize production in Russia of the Emgrand sedan. However, the possibility of producing the Monjaro crossover is now also being discussed. Thus, the company is targeting both the mass segment, including the taxi market, and the SUV format that is more in demand in Russia today.

      Despite active negotiations, a final decision on launching production has not yet been made.

      Earlier it became known that production of a new generation of cars under the Volga marque is planned to begin in Nizhny Novgorod in spring 2026.

      In May 2024, at the CIPR exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, modern Volga concepts on a Changan platform were shown publicly for the first time.
