In Nizhny Novgorod, a 73-year-old pensioner lost over 14 million rubles, falling victim to a multi-stage fraudulent scheme, according to the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
It all started when someone pretending to be his neighbor contacted the man and informed him about the intercom replacement in the building. The new device would allow residents to enter with a special code without using a key. The caller persuaded the Naumov resident to dictate the code, then the call was disconnected.
Subsequently, calls began coming from individuals posing as employees of Roskomnadzor and Rosfinmonitoring. The scammers persistently convinced the man that his finances were at risk due to his interactions with fraudsters. To "protect" his funds, the scammers suggested transferring savings to a "safe" account. As a result, the pensioner fell for the scam and transferred 2.7 million rubles from his savings account.
Furthermore, the fraudsters persuaded him to cash out an additional 10.5 million rubles from an investment account and hand over the money to a courier in Chernoprudsky Square.
Having obtained the pensioner's savings, the scammers did not stop. They told him that his dacha was also in danger and demanded another one million rubles.
The total damage exceeded 14 million rubles. An criminal case has been initiated under the article "Fraud." Law enforcement agencies have begun searching for the perpetrators.
