IncidentsAn elderly resident of Nizhny Novgorod fell victim to scammers, losing over 14 million rubles. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region.
According to available information, a 73-year-old man received a call from an unknown number. The caller, a woman, pretended to be his neighbor and informed him that the entrance doors and intercom system in the building would soon be replaced. She said that each resident would be assigned an individual code, allowing entry to the building without a key. Under the pretext of configuring the system, she asked the retiree to dictate a code from an SMS message received during the call. The man, not suspecting fraud, complied with the request. After that, the call was disconnected.
Some time later, other "specialists" called him—alleged representatives of Roskomnadzor and Rosfinmonitoring. They informed him that the previous call was an attempt at fraud, and that his personal data and finances were under threat.
To "protect" his funds, the man was advised to transfer money to a special account linked to a mobile application. The retiree withdrew 2.7 million rubles from his account and made six transfers to the specified details.
The next day, he cashed out another 10.5 million rubles from his investment account and handed the money to a courier in Chernoprudsky Square.
Later, the scammers contacted him again, claiming that his dacha was now under threat. To avoid "re-registration" of the property to third parties, the man was persuaded to transfer another one million rubles.
As a result, the total amount of damage amounted to 14,265,000 rubles.
A criminal case has been initiated on the grounds of fraud. Investigative actions continue.
Earlier, residents of Nizhny Novgorod were reminded how to identify if you are being contacted by scammers. NI
