According to Harry Muradyan, an expert in personnel management and a member of the expert council of the State Duma labor committee, the reasons for these refusals are much deeper. Analysts have calculated that, on average, a smoker spends about 138 hours a year on smoke breaks, significantly reducing their work efficiency. Muradyan, in an interview with 360.ru, pointed out that in the face of severe labor shortages and a constant volume of tasks, such breaks can adversely impact the overall productivity of the team. Additionally, smoking employees require a separate smoking area, which incurs extra costs for equipping and maintaining cleanliness. This also creates discomfort for non-smoking colleagues who have to tolerate the smell of tobacco. The expert further mentioned that smoking employees tend to seek medical help more often, leading to higher insurance costs for the company. Moreover, smoking areas can become hotspots for conflicts and gossip, negatively affecting the workplace atmosphere. Establishing separate groups based on the presence or absence of bad habits may result in a division within the team and create tension. However, it is impossible to fire an employee for smoking, as it violates their rights. In the event of a dispute, the worker could turn to the labor inspectorate or court, which would likely side with them. All of these factors compel some employers to reevaluate their hiring policies.
